Campionissimo:
Italian for champion of champions. Fausto Coppi earned the nickname Campionissimo by the adorning tifosi and press through his many successes. Those included 5 Giro d’Italia, 2 Tour de France, World Champion, hour record holder and countless other major classic one day wins, Coppi’s win tally would undoubtedly have been more if it wasn’t for the interruption of World War two. Coppi rode in an era when attack was the best form of defence, his ability to climb, sprint and time trial meant he was a major force to be reckoned with no matter what the race, from Paris-Roubaix to the Tour de France through to the Tour of Lombardy, Coppi was a season long competitor a rarity in today’s day and age.
